Post card from Kanyakumair ( Tamil Nadu) 1981

Tip of India, Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is the 'land end' of India where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean and at the full moon, it is possible to enjoy the unique experience of seeing the sunset and the moon rise over the ocean simultaneously. As we arrived late, we missed this whole experience.

The name, Kanyakumari means ' Youthful Virgin' who is a goddess and incarnation of goddess Devi, the wife of God Siva. I was far too tired to visit any of the temples connected with the 'Youthful Virgin', however I did stand at the very tip of the subcontinent for hours and looked out to the sea and wondered if I could find a boat to take me home to my base camp in Delhi! No such luck!!
