Post card from Allahabad ( Utter Pradesh) 1981

Beggars being fed in Allahabad

To reach our final spiritual place of Allahabad, we travelled through Hyderabad which has a Muslim heritage and is in, one of the least developed states of India.

In Allahabad the river Ganga and river Jumna ( Yamuna), the two most important rivers meet and the meeting point of the rivers, known as ' the sangam' is believed to have great soul- cleaning powers and is the major pilgrimage site. It is even more holy because the invisible ' Saraswati' river is suppose to join the Ganges and the Jumna at the meeting point. Every twelve years the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest pilgrimage gathering, draws millions of holy dip here and I was there in 1981 having my very own dip without the knowledge of it's power and it's importance!!
